Floodplain Management and Information
The City of Wharton would like to ensure that all residents are taking the necessary steps to protect themselves from floods. Regardless of where you live, everyone is at risk for flooding. Now is the perfect time to make sure you are knowledgeable on how to protect yourself and your property for the next major storm.
As a public service, residents may obtain flood risk information. The City of Wharton will provide you with the following information upon request:
- Whether a property is located in the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) as shown on the current Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) of the City.
- Additional flood insurance data for the general area where a site is located such as the approximate base flood elevation, if shown on the FIRM, prior history of flood and is available possible depth of flooding if it occurs.
- Flood Insurance literature for residents of the City who are interested in obtaining real estate loans for properties purchased in flood prone areas.
- Whether a property is located in a floodway. If it is, we will explain the regulatory requirements for developing in a floodway.

There is no charge for this service. The Building Department has completed FEMA Elevation Certificates for buildings that were constructed in the floodplain since 2000 and maintains copies on location.
Elevation Certificate
Elevation Certificates are FEMA forms used to rate a structure for flood insurance purposes. They are also needed by Wharton Code Enforcement Department to verify that a structure has been built in compliance with the floodplain ordinance and other regulations. | Read More
